How to Join the Playtest

Joining takes about a minute:

  • Open the Sublustrum Steam page while logged into your Steam account.
  • Find the Playtest section on the store page (listed as App 4191280) and click Request Access.
  • Wait for the invitation — Steam notifies you when access is granted, and the playtest then appears in your library ready to download.

Sign-up is open to everyone; there is no purchase, pre-order or key required. Invitations are typically granted in waves, so if you are not in immediately, keep the request active and check your Steam notifications.

What Is in the Playtest?

The developers have not published a detailed list of the playtest's contents. Playtests for narrative horror games of this kind usually cover an early slice of the game — enough to meet the core mechanics (here: the sound-driven puzzles and the Flickering World) without spoiling the full story.

Expect work-in-progress elements: placeholder UI, unbalanced puzzles, and possibly limited language options. That is normal for a playtest. If you run into bugs, report them through Steam — that feedback is the entire point of the test.

Playtest vs. Full Release

The playtest is a separate Steam app (App 4191280) from the main game (App 4151300). Progress in the playtest almost certainly will not carry over to the full release in Fall 2026 — playtest builds are routinely wiped. Treat it as a preview, not a head start.

Can Your PC Run It?

Use the official system requirements as your baseline: at minimum a 64-bit Windows 10 machine with an i5-7400 or Ryzen 5 1600, 8 GB of RAM, and a GTX 1060 3GB or RX 580 4GB. The full minimum and recommended specs are on our system requirements page. If your rig clears the minimum bar, the playtest is a free, risk-free way to confirm performance before launch.

Tips Before You Start

  • Wear headphones. This is a sound-driven game — the puzzles revolve around tuning frequencies and following voices hidden in static. Speakers will cost you nuance.
  • Play in the dark, uninterrupted. The Flickering World is built on atmosphere; the 2008 original won awards for its sound design, and the remake doubles down on it.
  • Take notes. Frequencies, half-heard phrases and machine settings are puzzle inputs. A notepad (physical or digital) helps.
